Lollards and other heretics
[VARILLAS, Antoine, attributed to.]
2 parts in one vol., 12mo (130 × 75 mm), pp. [viii], 146, [10]; [ii], 146, [10]. Woodcut ornaments to titles, other ornaments to text. Light browning or spotting throughout. Contemporary sprinkled calf, gilt panelled spine, marbled edges, rubbed (loss of gilt to spine) minor expert repair to joints. Eighteenth-century notes in Italian on Wat Tyler and others to blank at rear. A good copy.
First separate edition, attributed by some authors to Varillas; according to Michaud and Nouvelle biographie générale, it is an extract from his Histoire des revolutions arrivées dans Europe, though disavowed by him. The statements "Dernier edition" and "Suivant la copie imprimée a Lyon" on the title page would both appear to be false. This is a detailed account of the major medieval heresies especially those of John Wyclif and the Lollards in England and of Jan Hus in Bohemia. This copy contains some interesting later (probably eighteenth-century) notes in Italian at the rear concerning Wat Tyler (rather poetically rendered 'Gualtieri il pentolaio') and the Peasant's Revolt of 1381.
