The school for wives. A comedy. As it is performed at the Theatre-Royal in Drury-Lane.
London: for T. Becket,   1774.
8vo, pp. [viii], vi, [2], 88. Disbound.
First edition of a popular comedy which achieved five editions within two years, and had various stage revivals during the next forty years. Kelly was born in Killarney, the son of a Dublin tavern keeper. Becoming a lawyer in London to support a growing family he found considerable success in the theatre. "Kelly's third play, The School for Wives (1774), was the most successful drama in Drury Lane's 1773–4 season. Another comedy involving marriages and disguises, the play ran for twenty-four nights. It was printed in five editions and was seen in 1805 in Bath" (ODNB). He died in 1777 from complications arising from a failed operation at the New Street Bagnio to remove an abcess in his side.
