London: for A. Millar, 1764.
8vo, pp. [vi], 68, [2]. Lacks half-title. Disbound.
First edition of the second of Mrs Sheridan's comedies. Dublin born, Frances Sheridan became a much respected novelist (Miss Sidney Biddulph) and playwright, admired by Johnson, Boswell and Young. The Dupe was produced at Drury Lane by George Colman before being withdrawn after three nights, allegedly because 'of the theatrical cabals of a popular actress [Kitty Clive]' (ODNB).
