First edition of a work "designed to explain and defend the position of the Church of England, so far as it involves that of the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States" (Preface). Seabury was of a dynasty of American protestant churchmen: his grandfather (also Samuel) had been the first American Episcopal bishop.
