2 vols., 8vo (207 × 118 mm.), pp. xxii, [xxvi], 406; [xvi], 422. 24 engraved plates (including frontispiece to vol. 1) by Van de Gucht after Van de Band. Some browning and spotting throughout, later ownership inscriptions. Contemporary sprinkled calf, panelled spines with 5 raised bands, red morocco labels lettered in gilt, numbered direct. Rubbed, joints of vol.1 just starting at head. A good copy.
Jarvis's edition, which "is generally acknowledged as being close in spirit to the original" (Oxford DNB) was first published in 1742 and was frequently reprinted. It includes a reimpression of The life of Michael de Cervantes Saavedra. Written by Don Gregorio Mayáns & Siscár (1738) and A supplement to the translator's preface, more commonly known as A dissertation on the origin of books of chivalry, by William Warburton.
